EAP Professional Development

English: EAP Teacher Workshop - 12th Grade Expository Reading and Writing Course

Responding to requests from the California Department of Education and high schools, the California State University, working with college and high school English faculty and reading experts, developed a curriculum for a 12th grade Expository Reading and Writing Course that may be used by the high school as a full, one-year course or from which modules may be integrated into existing 12th grade English classes. The Expository Reading and Writing Course is aligned with the English-Language Arts content standards and consists of lessons based on non-fiction and fiction texts.
It may fulfill the "B" requirement of the UC/CSU (a-g) college preparatory course pattern. The California State University, in collaboration with the County Offices of Education, provides professional development programs for high school English teachers for the 12th grade Expository Reading and Writing Course as well as for high school mathematics teachers.

English: Reading Institute for Academic Preparation

The goal is to increase student success and proficiency for college course and workforce related requirements by improving their reading skills. High school teachers, AVID teachers, Department chairs, Administrators and Counselors are welcome to participate.

Math: Improving College Readiness in Mathematics

Early Assessment Program (EAP) Professional Development for High School and Middle School Math Teachers
The EAP Teacher Workshop - Math professional development program is undergoing redesign in both content and presentation. The EAP awareness portion of the program will be offered online this year www.calstate.edu/eap/mathpd. The mathematics portion of the program will be offered in San Mateo on June 19.
DEADLINE June 5.

The workshop will cover:

1. Analysis of student responses to standardized test items (CST), which allows participants to see large trends in students' mathematical reasoning skills.
2. Analysis of student classroom work, which allows participants to see how THEIR student think about math
3. Teaching techniques for bringing math alive for all students ¡¾ (comparison solving, integrating topics, limit cases and counterexamples, etc.)
4. Creating advanced problems at all math levels to challenge our students to develop their math reasoning skills The background EAP material is now included in a 45-minute online introduction, which you can access at..http://pd.csusuccess.org/eapmath.
5. This introduction is linked to the workshop registration system, so you can follow the link to sign up for the workshops, too. (The introduction provides valuable information about students' college readiness, including links to local and regional performance data. Note: The introduction contains video testimonials from three California HS math teachers who participated in a previous version of the math workshops.
