Presidential Award for Probationary Faculty
What is the timeframe for a Presidential Award?
Awards are for one semester with full pay or for two semesters with half pay.
Who is eligible for a Presidential Award?
- To apply, faculty must be in their second, third, or fourth probationary year. The leave will be taken in the subsequent third, fourth, or fifth probationary year.
- Faculty who have recently received their doctoral degree and/or for whom their appointment at San Francisco State University is their first position as an Assistant Professor will be given preference.
- A faculty member granted a Presidential Award must return to the service of SFSU to render one term of service for each term of leave granted.
What are the criteria for the Presidential Award?
The evaluation of Presidential Awards will be based on activities contained in the criteria for retention, tenure, and promotion:
- Activities which will increase the candidate's teaching effectiveness.
- Activities which enhance professional achievement and growth.
- Activities which demonstrate University non-teaching service or community service.
Awards are competitive and will be granted on the basis of proposals which demonstrate the ability of the faculty member to accomplish the project within the time-frame of the award, the significance of the activity, the clarity of the proposal, and the need for the award.
When is the application for a Presidential Award due and how many copies of the application must be submitted?
The original application and sufficient copies for the college review process must be submitted to the college/library office in October. Contact your college office or the Faculty Affairs Office for application deadline.
How are applications for a Presidential Award reviewed?
- Applications are reviewed by the college dean/university librarian who, after appropriate consultation, sends ranked recommendations to the President via the Provost.
- The President reviews the ranked recommendations and makes his decision for the awards.
