CSU Portfolio Project

Project Goals

One significant effort was undertaken by the Dean's of Education ePortfolio Task Force This link opens in a new window. The Chancellor's Office is committed to helping build a system-wide Community of Practice on ePortfolios. As ePortfolio efforts continued on many campuses, the Chancellor's Office saw a real opportunity for the system to gain additional expertise by becoming a member of the EduTools e-Portfolio Research Project.

Faculty, academic programs, and accreditation agencies are choosing and/or requiring the use of ePortfolios to create personalized resources for quality teaching and learning. The emerging use of ePortfolios is complex and rapidly changing which makes planning on how to choose and use ePortfolios a challenge for us all. To help support campus, academic program, and individual faculty decision making on ePortfolios, the Office of the Chancellor will be coordinating a systemwide project to:

  1. Compare the features of ePortfolio products
  2. Research selected issues in ePortfolios
  3. Share advances made by project participants in the effective use of ePortfolios

We will be joining with other institutions, statewide higher education governing and coordinating agencies, and multi-institutional partnerships to extend this research and to chart the state of the art in ePortfolio technology and implementation issues that affect impact. The CSU System will be part of the WCET, EduTools and EPAC so we will be able to leverage the expertise and experience throughout the United States.

WCET, EduTools, and EPAC have brought together a variety of strengths: EduTools provides unbiased, independent comparisons of e-learning products. EduTools is most noted for its work in comparing course management systems. EduTools principal investigators, Bruce Landon and Scott Leslie, will lead research activities on this project.

WCET (www.wcet.info This link opens in a new window) is a leader in the effective use of e-learning tools. The EPAC virtual community of practice is a leading venue for sharing ePortfolio advanced and best practices.

Through their extensive network of members and partners, WCET and EPAC are natural conveners of those leading the way in the use of e-learning tools. A brief survey by the EduTools team found more than a dozen competing ePortfolio packages aimed at post-secondary education. We believe that having an organized forum to discuss these issues will be beneficial to all who participate.
