As a Presidential Scholar at San Francisco State University, you will get the best of two worlds: personalized small-college attention within a major urban university setting. You will begin your studies with a select, diverse group of peers whose academic and personal accomplishments have set them apart. You will receive:
A merit scholarship covering full academic fees and $500.00 per year for books; renewable for eight semesters based on performance. Guaranteed residence space on campus if you apply for it. Up to $4000 for housing allowance in freshman year.
Personal attention and academic enrichment: A special welcome and advising sessions during the summer, before you register for classes. A freshman orientation seminar introducing Scholars to university life. Classes in Critical Thinking and Oral Communication, taken with other Presidential Scholars, that count toward your general education requirements. Personalized instruction on how to use your Internet and e-mail account.
Presidential Scholar group events: Dinner with the President for you and your family or guests. Cultural events that spark your intellect and stretch your horizons, such as trips to the San Francisco Symphony or the Palace of the Legion of Honor museum. A one-day coastal fieldtrip with the director of the Presidential Scholars program. And co-curricular activities that are just for fun.
Be challenged, and be confident of support when you need it.
Wide range of first-rate programs
SFSU offers more than 200 fields of study and awards bachelor’s degrees in 112 areas of specialization, providing you with an exceptional breadth of choice and depth of focus. Many of our programs have earned national recognition for their innovation, for opening new avenues of thought and discovery.
Gifted, accessible faculty
Our professors are known for their excellent, learning-centered teaching. All SFSU students, and particularly Presidential Scholars, have close contact with faculty who are winning awards and doing cutting-edge research—even discovering planets—while working side-by-side with their students.
A vibrant, urban campus
The society of the future is studying on SFSU’s campus today—the broadest mix of race, ethnicity, culture, age, and life experience you’re likely to find anywhere. Over 200 clubs and organizations, from the African American Social Work Caucus to the Zymurgists Club, and 28 fraternities and sororities will help you connect with others. Located in one of the world’s most ethnically rich cities, and with students enrolled from across the nation and more than 90 countries, SFSU helps prepare you with the skills and insight necessary to succeed in a pluralistic society and global economy.
Hands-on learning, real world experience
Credit-earning internships are built into many majors at SFSU. We sponsor more than 100 community-focused centers and institutes, offering you the chance to work with professionals on hundreds of different real-life projects, from producing a cable TV news show, to running a teen health and counseling center, to developing a public relations program for a local non-profit group.
Technology at your fingertips
We’re streamlining the details of student life: you can register for classes or check your financial aid status entirely by phone; get fast campus information and transcripts from interactive, electronic kiosks; or plan your class schedule with help on the Web. Each SFSU student receives a personal e-mail and Internet account, and with more than a dozen computing labs on campus, including some open 24 hours a day, hundreds of computers are available for your use, free of charge.
Enriching on-campus living opportunities
Presidential Scholars who choose to live on campus have the added advantage of learning where they live—outside, as well as inside, the classroom. On-campus Scholars enjoy many benefits, including a 24-hour Resident Computer Lab, study and support groups, and the opportunity to form life-long friendships by living, studying and sharing experiences together in a supportive environment.
A dynamic, cosmopolitan city
San Francisco is a global center of business, technology, and culture. As a laboratory for meaningful work-study and community involvement, for personal growth and recreation, San Francisco and the greater Bay Area help make SFSU an ideal place to live and to learn. Presidential Scholars are introduced to the City’s culture and history by professors and artists who know it well.
