SF State and College of Marin Partnership
The College of Marin and San Francisco State University Partnership is pleased to bring the Pathways Program for the Child and Adolescent Development major to the COM Indian Valley Campus. We are pleased that you have elected to participate in this unique program. The following information is provided to ensure that students fully understand and comply with requirements of participation.
What is Pathways?
Pathways is a program by which students are introduced to SFSU’s degree programs held at community colleges. It permits eligible current and former community college students to enroll in a maximum of two courses in selected SFSU majors at reduced fees before being admitted to the University. Pathways affords students an opportunity to “try before they buy” and helps them gain confidence in their ability to do upper division course work. Courses taken via Pathways generate a SFSU transcript and will apply toward graduation in specific majors once a student has transferred.
Do Pathways differ from other SF State courses?
No. Courses offered through Pathways are SFSU upper division courses required in specified majors, taught by SFSU faculty, held according to the SFSU academic calendar, and subject to SFSU policies and regulations. Pathways students typically have regular SFSU students sitting alongside them in these classes. Regular SFSU students, however, pay regular SFSU tuition for the courses and enroll through regular university procedures.
Who is eligible to participate in Pathways?
- Students who are within one semester of being “transfer ready”. Students who have completed a minimum of 60 lower division units of which 30 units are required general education are considered “transfer ready”. To be within one semester of “transfer ready” means that students will have completed 42-45 lower division units which include general education.
- Students who have never been admitted to SFSU or to any 4-year academic institution. Students returning from attendance at 4-year institutions are ineligible for the Pathways Program.
Can an eligible student take more than two courses through Pathways?
No. To continue taking SFSU courses in any locale after completing two courses through Pathways, students must apply for admission and be accepted to SFSU or enroll through SFSU Open University
What is Open University and how can I enroll?
Open University is a program of SFSU’s College of Extended Learning. Students may take SFSU credit courses without being admitted to the University; no transcripts, applications, or other documentation are required, and you may apply credits you earn to a degree later, if you wish. Note: A maximum of 24 units taken through Open U (which includes all units taken through Pathways) may be applied to a degree. Open University fees are currently $210/unit or $660 for a 3-unit course. To learn more about Open U and obtain a registration form, go online to
